Wall-board, gypsum panels, sheet-rock, custard boards, and buster boards are all common names for drywall. A drywall is a sheathing that is made with Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate, commonly known as gypsum. This consists of two paper boards that are sandwiched by the gypsum panel.

A drywall is usually installed on the interior side of ceilings and walls. The plaster is mixed with fiberglass, paper fiber, plasticizer, foaming agent, and a couple of other materials to stabilize the plaster and lower the chances of water absorption, flammability, and mildew.

Advantages of Drywall

  • Since Calcium Sulfate and water (CaSo4+H2O) are present in drywall, it is resistant to fire.
  • A drywall is a cost-effective option. It is cheaper than installing plaster and costs less than other methods that involve paving and smoothing the ceiling and walls.
  • Drywall can be permanent, as well as temporary, depending on what you are searching for. If you wish to install drywall on the ceiling and walls, it can stay there permanently. If drywall is installed on a partition wall, it will be temporary. You can cut, dismantle, and change it whenever you want.
  • With drywall ceilings and walls, you can install recessed lighting. Moreover, cloth hangers, paintings, and mirrors can also be hung easily.

Disadvantages of Drywall

  • A drywall is not safe to install around water as it absorbs water. This water can then pass through the structure and cause it to collapse. Hence, if you have a water problem, do not use drywall on the ceiling.
  • Damp drywallis vulnerable to mold infestation. It weakens the structure of the drywall, becoming a safety hazard.
  • If it is not plastered, the surface of the drywall can be damaged easily.
  • You need to ensure that you find drywall experts who know what they are doing. If the task is done poorly and the joints do not get attached properly, the entire structure will be vulnerable.
  • When drywall is being installed, a lot of dust will be produced. Hence, the space will need to be prepared accordingly. Otherwise, the entire house will fill with dust.
